SynVer*Z supports the Sustainable Transformation of Urban Areas funding programme and the City of the Future flagship initiative launched by Germany’s Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to address key issues of sustainable urban development.

The Sustainable Transformation of Urban Areas programme was one of the first initiatives to come out of Germany’s Science Year 2015 – City of the Future, and is part of the social-ecological research funding priority of Germany’s Ministry of Education and Research. Twenty-three collaborative projects, which started between June 2016 and February 2017, are being supported. They ask key questions about urban development in the future. How can cities encourage the shift towards sustainable economic structures? What potential is there in linking infrastructures? How can social integration and ecological sustainability be effectively combined?
